Come join our team! The Capitol Region Council of Governments is seeking a dynamic, collaborative, and visionary professional to become our newest Principal Planner in the Regional Planning & Development department.
The successful candidate will perform various planning tasks within CRCOG’s Regional Planning & Development department. This position reports to the Director of Regional Planning & Development.
This position is responsible for a variety of planning tasks including, but not limited to: providing planning, research, and policy analysis for the greater CRCOG region in various areas of land use and development, including housing, complete streets, economic development, and sustainability; project management of multiple CRCOG planning studies simultaneously, including the RFQ process, project scoping, consultant selection, contracting, and invoicing; grant management; and working with other staff members to help the Agency and municipalities complete land use and transportation planning projects and initiatives.
The successful candidate for Principal Planner will hold a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in planning, urban planning, urban studies, geography, environmental or sustainability planning, economic development, or similar focus. This education should be supplemented by a minimum of seven years of relevant professional planning experience. A Master’s degree and AICP certification are preferred. An equivalent combination of training will be considered.
The candidate should have a knowledge of: general principles, practices, and techniques of urban planning; Federal, State, and Local regulations and laws regarding planning and land development; land use, economic development, and/or environmental planning, research, and analysis; the State of Connecticut planning process; project development, implementation, and management; environmental justice; the political, social, and economic implications of planning; the methods of conducting research and field surveys requiring collection, evaluation, and tabulation of data; census data and its utilization in various planning processes; data analysis and visualization; and computer equipment, including the advanced use of word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, database, and other software.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate initiative and the ability to: communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing; research and analyze various factors involved in land use planning and development; prepare clear, accurate records and reports; prepare and present effectively; establish and maintain highly effective working relationships with staff, managers, community members, business and municipal leaders, and others encountered during work; handle multiple projects simultaneously and use good judgment in prioritizing work assignments; and work independently.

Total Compensation
The current salary range is $74,613 – $96,996 for Principal Planner (Grade 5). CRCOG offers a competitive benefits package including a defined contribution retirement plan (currently 10% of salary with no match required); medical, vision, dental, life insurance; short-term and long-term disability; tuition assistance; and paid vacation and holidays. This is a full-time position with a 35-hour work week. We currently offer a hybrid office arrangement with an approximate 50% in-person requirement at CRCOG offices.
