Job Description
The Wilmington Area Planning Council (WILMAPCO) is seeking a Senior Transportation Planner, to start in January 2025. This is a mid-level planning position with an emphasis on transportation including its
integration with land use, environment, and demographics. It requires communication and analytic skills to collect, analyze, and present data and develop local and regional plans, programs, data reports, and
special assignments. Work involves supervising the activities of consultants and other professional and technical personnel.
Compensation: The position is for a full-time, salaried planner that includes an excellent benefits package. The starting salary range for this position, which is dependent on experience, is $62,000 to $70,000.
Specific Duties:
• Assists in developing and updating required transportation planning elements and initiatives as defined by current federal legislation.
• Maintains a working knowledge of all federal and state legislation relative to transportation and transportation planning issues
• Conducts technical research on topics dealing with transportation, land use, air quality, demographic trends, social factors, and natural resources.
• Prepare and publish charts, brochures, manuals and illustrations that deal with existing and proposed programs in the region.
• Serve as project manager overseeing the work of consultants.
• Delegate and supervise the work of lower-level planners.
• Represent WILMAPCO at public functions involving all levels of public and private sector officials.
• Reviews transportation needs and priorities of local, state and public interest groups so that the agency can provide appropriate services to citizens
Minimum Job Qualifications:
• Advanced knowledge of current concepts, general principles and practices of planning
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills, relate effectively to other people both individually and in groups
• Knowledge of research methodology, data organization and analysis.
• Knowledge of computer software including word processing, spreadsheets and databases
• Ability to work with technical programs such as GIS, Travel Demand Modeling, subscription-based analytical software, website management and development, etc.
• Ability to produce and present analyses, reports and planning studies
• Ability to work cooperatively with other agencies and build consensus among stakeholders
• Ability to travel to attend meetings, conferences, seminars as needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning, Geography, Civil Engineering or related field and five years of recent
transportation planning experience or a Master’s degree and three years of experience of recent transportation planning experience.
