Brief Description of Work:
The Signal Optimization Engineer (Senior Traffic Engineer) is responsible for the preparation and evaluation of arterial timing plans for the city street system. This individual will coordinate with GDOT signals field technicians to ensure proper controller operation to properly execute programmed timing plans. This employee will conduct various studies including travel time and saturation flow analysis to determine the effectiveness of the arterial timing plans. Employee will evaluate warrant studies to determine the need for installation of new traffic signals. This individual will prepare design plans for new traffic signal installations, modifications to existing traffic signals, and certify these plans with professional engineering licensing credentials. This employee coordinates with the safety staff at the Guilford County Schools Administration and schedules the programming and operation of all school zone flashers within the city.
This job is Exempt and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Bachelor’s Degree with 4 or more years’ engineering experience in traffic signal timing and design
Or Associate’s Degree with 6 or more years’ engineering experience in traffic signal timing and design
Valid NC Professional Engineer License
Valid Driver’s License
Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering
Experience with local, state, and federal design standards including Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)
Experience using signal optimization software packages such as Passer or Synchro
Experience with operational parameters of 2070-based traffic signal controllers including time-based coordination capabilities
Experience reading and interpreting engineering plans, specifications, and technical reports
Experience using Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software to develop detailed design plans
Experience performing detailed GIS analysis using ESRI ArcMap
