Engagement Intern
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization (IMPO) is seeking a part-time Engagement Intern to support public outreach and communications efforts across Central Indiana. This role assists with messaging, event coordination, and community engagement related to regional transportation, land use, housing, and environmental planning. Interns will help design materials, attend public events, and contribute to the IMPO’s mission of inclusive and transparent regional planning.
This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in public engagement, communications, and planning while working with a collaborative and professional team. Expected Hours of Work: This is a part-time position reporting 20-29 hours per week.
Travel Requirements: This position requires some travel and some evening/weekend availability.
- Assist Engagement Specialist with public messaging and public engagement tasks as requested
- Draft or design flyers, newsletter, social media messaging and advertisements, and other meeting materials
- Help organize educational and engagement events including securing meeting spaces and speakers as necessary
- Attend public engagement events, fairs, and festivals as requested to talk with the public about IMPO work and gather public feedback
- Review and summarize information received during public engagement periods
- Assist with the IMPOs public engagement deliverables
- Assist with administrative tasks and information preparation for IMPO committee meetings
- Develop working relationships and form teams with local planning staff, federal and state agencies, and stakeholders to share information
Basic Qualifications:
- Coursework or degree in communications, public administration, public affairs, urban planning, environmental affairs, or related field.
- Strong communication skills
- Familiarity with social media
- Some evening and weekend availability to attend public meetings or events
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of and some experience with spreadsheets and relational databases is a plus.
- Experience with data processing and presentation
- Familiarity with Adobe graphic design software is a plus.

Physical Demands & Work Environment: This position requires long periods of standing as well as transport of materials to and from event locations. This would require the ability to lift materials up to 30 pounds, open filing cabinets and bend, stoop, or stand as necessary.
