PRE- AND POST-CONFERENCE MOBILE TOURS

2025 AMPO Annual Conference host, the Rhode Island Division of Statewide Planning, has organized the following pre- and post-conference optional mobile tours for conference participants. Tours are not included in the conference registration fee. Separate sign-up and fee required after your conference registration is received. Look for the sign-up links in your registration confirmation email.
Start/end time: 12:00 – 7:00 PM
Description: This pre-conference mobile tour starts by taking in the beauty of Narragansett Bay from the Rhode Island Department of Transportation’s contracted ferry service, Seastreak, on a one-hour journey from Providence to Newport, the Sailing Capitol of the World. Upon arrival, the group will walk to The Point neighborhood, an historic gridded street neighborhood mapped by early Quaker settlers, and site of recent efforts to ensure that proactive and preventative steps are taken to respond to the threat of climate change and develop resiliency. This tour will be followed by a shuttle ride to Rough Point, Doris Duke’s historic mansion on Ocean Road where her vision for preserving and restoring cultural heritage through Keeping History Above Water® was founded in 2016 to foster a global conversation focused on the increasing and varied risks of sea-level rise to historic coastal communities.
As a leader in the preservation of early American architecture, the Newport Restoration Foundation is responding to the threat of climate change through Keeping History Above Water (KHAW) – which brings interdisciplinary conferences and workshops focused on protecting historic assets, cultural resources, and neighborhoods to vulnerable regions across the country and around the world.
This tour involves walking and some light physical activity, including climbing stairs. Participants should be able to comfortably walk for short to moderate distances without difficulty.
Price: $95/pp. Price includes boxed lunch.
Sign-up Deadline: Wednesday, August 13, 2025 (Note – limited capacity; tour may sell out prior to August 13.)
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Friday Post-Conference Mobile Tour is being modified. We are working diligently to ensure that that we provide an exciting and enjoyable experience for participants. Paid registrants will be provided the opportunity to request a full refund should the modified tour no longer be of interest. In the event that the tour is canceled, all registered participants will receive a full refund. We appreciate your understanding and will keep you updated as we finalize tour details.
Start/end time: 8:30 AM – 12:00 PM
Description: In the heart of Providence, there is an urban greenway managed and developed by the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council (WRWC) to spark economic development through work restoring the Woonasquatucket River and the communities around it, and by enhancing, extending and bringing people to the Woonasquatucket River Greenway.
Woon-as-kwah-tuck-it – the name of the river means “where the salt water ends” in Algonquin. On July 30, 1998, President Clinton designated the Woonasquatucket River as one of only 14 American Heritage Rivers in the nation. The Woonasquatucket River was chosen in part because of the significant role it played in the Industrial Revolution. It was one of the first rivers to be dammed by mill-owners to insure a steady supply of water year-round for their mills. The WRWC is a successful model of community revitalization that helps people discover this local American Heritage River and its natural resources, channeling life and economic development into neighborhoods. This bike tour will take in some of the highlights of the corridor, with stops to talk about significant projects and green infrastructure, and ending at Farm Fresh Rhode Island, a hub for local food in Rhode Island. When the tour ends, participants will have the option to walk or bike ride back to the Omni Providence/Rhode Island Convention Center.
Physical Activity Level: Moderate-to-High with a good comfort level for bike riding in an urban setting.
Price: $75/pp. No meals are included in the price.
Sign-up Deadline: Wednesday, August 13, 2025 (Note – limited capacity; tour may sell out prior to August 13.)
