ABOUT AMPO
The Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations (AMPO) represents the collective interests of more than 400 metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs) nationwide. AMPO provides advocacy, technical assistance, professional development, and research to strengthen regional transportation planning and investment decision-making.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
AMPO seeks an MPO Institute & Education Associate to plan, manage, and execute key operational, research, and educational initiatives supporting AMPO’s planning, research, and member programming. This role plays a central role in overseeing the development, coordination, and delivery of MPO Institute courses and related educational offerings, while ensuring effective execution of survey research, conferences, and member engagement initiatives. The Associate works closely with and advises the Director of Planning & Research to deliver high-quality outcomes for AMPO members and stakeholders.
Educational Programming & MPO Institute
- Manage day-to-day coordination of the MPO Institute and related educational programs
- Oversee learner support, registration tracking, and learning management system (LMS) administration
- Coordinate logistics for in-person events related to the MPO Institute
- Maintain and update course materials and educational resources
Research & Content Creation
- Manage surveys, data tracking, and report preparation
- Develop and format practitioner resources
- Review and prepare content for publication
- Maintain organized files and documentation for research initiatives
Administrative & Operational Responsibilities
- Manage project timelines, tracking systems, and documentation
- Coordinate with consultants, vendors, and partners
- Develop and manage internal workflow organization and process documentation
- Identify and implement improved processes, templates, and tracking tools for program efficiency
Program & Event Coordination
- Assist with planning and execution of webinars, conferences, symposiums, and peer exchanges
- Assist with speaker communication, scheduling, and materials
- Support agenda preparation and session logistics
- Assist with post-event follow-up
Member Engagement & Support
- Respond to member inquiries related to programs and educational opportunities
- Support engagement with AMPO interest groups and committees
- Assist with outreach and communication efforts to members
- Maintain accurate records of member interactions and participation
Cross-Functional Coordination
- Collaborate with communications, membership, and events teams
- Support coordination across program areas to ensure alignment
- Contribute to efforts in standardizing procedures and documentation across programs
And other duties as assigned
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED
A Bachelor or Master of Arts or Science degree is preferred, preferably in adult education, instructional design, curriculum development, public administration, urban planning, communications, organizational development, or a related field.
A minimum of 5 years of professional experience is preferred in adult education, workforce development, professional training, instructional design, curriculum development, association management, or a related field. Experience developing and delivering educational programs for professional audiences is strongly preferred.
Candidates should demonstrate experience translating complex subject matter into engaging learning experiences, managing educational programs, coordinating subject matter experts, and developing written content for diverse audiences.
Experience working with professional associations, public sector organizations, transportation agencies, planning organizations, or other mission-driven organizations is desirable but not required. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.

- Experience with adult learning principles and instructional design methodologies
- Experience developing online, instructor-led, and blended learning programs
- Experience coordinating subject matter experts and translating technical content into learner-centered materials
- Knowledge of professional certification, continuing education, or workforce development programs
- Knowledge of MPOs, transportation planning, federal transportation programs, and regional policy issues preferred
- Experience supporting events or programs preferred
Communication
- Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills, including experience developing reports, newsletters, educational materials, and professional publications
- Strong research skills, including survey design, data analysis, literature review, and synthesis of technical information
- Comfort interacting with members and stakeholders
Technical
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and common collaboration, survey, and learning management platforms.
- Familiarity with LMS and educational technologies
- Ability to learn new systems and technologies quickly
BENEFITS AND HOW TO APPLY
Salary and Benefits: This is a full-time position with a starting annual salary range of $50,000 to $60,000, based on qualifications and experience. AMPO offers a competitive benefits package including healthcare and a retirement plan.
Travel: This position may require travel to the AMPO Annual Conference, the AMPO Planning Tools & Training Symposium, and other events as needed.
Remote Work: This position is eligible for remote work and does not require residency within the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Area.
Hours: This position is full-time and salary-based.
