In February, AMPO and AASTHO sent a joint letter to the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee and the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations to request that Congress provide the U.S. Census Bureau with the resources needed to conduct a full and accurate population count during the 2020 Decennial Census Survey. We are pleased to inform you that the recently passed $1.3 trillion omnibus spending bill increased funding for the U.S. Census Bureau by $1.3 billion compared to fiscal year 2017 and President Trump’s budget request, bringing the total to $2.8 billion for fiscal year 2018. In addition, $2.5 billion of the $2.8 billion will be used to fund periodic censuses and programs as well as funding efforts to sufficiently prepare for the 2020 Decennial Census Survey.
